Sur les matrices non négatives et les solutions positives de certains systèmes linéaires. (French) JFM 65.1114.02

Verf. hat in einer früheren Arbeit (Ann. sci. École norm. sup. (3) 30 (1913), 53-76; F. d. M. 44, 161) gezeigt, daß für eine nichtnegative quadratische Matrix \(a\) und eine nichtnegative einspaltige Matrix \(b\) das lineare Gleichungssystem \((se-a)x=b\) (\(s\) reelle Zahl, \(e\) Einheitsmatrix) dann und nur dann einen positiven Lösungsvektor \(x\) besitzt, wenn \(s\) größer als die sogenannte maximale Wurzel \(r\) ist. Dabei heißen Matrizen nicht negativ, wenn dies für jedes Element gilt. \(r\) ist eine reelle Lösung von \(|xe-a|=0\), sie existiert immer für nichtnegatives \(a\) nach G. Frobenius (S.-B. Preuß. Akad. Wiss. 1908, 471-476; 1909, 514-518; 1912, 456-477; F. d. M. 39, 213; 40, 202; 43, 204) und hat maximalen Betrag. Hier findet Verf. nun durch Aufspaltung der Matrix \((se-a)=\alpha \lambda\beta'\) (\(\alpha\), \(\beta\) Dreiecksmatrizen, \(\lambda\) Diagonalmatrix), die rekursiv gewonnen werden kann, als notwendig und hinreichend für \(s>r\) die Bedingung: Alle Diagonalelemente von \(\lambda\) sind positiv. Es handelt sich um eine Darstellung der von C. Lanczos (Bull. Amer. math. Soc. 42 (1936), 325) als Auszug angegebenen Methode.
