A short report on the structure of Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) and main directions of scientific research to be carried out by its staff.
WIAS was founded in 1992 out of the former Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. The Institute has 83 permanent positions, including 54 for scientists. It is divided into 7 research groups; 1) Partial differential equations and variational equations; 2) Dynamical systems and control theory; 3) Numerical mathematics and scientific computing; 4) Integral equations and pseudodifferential equations; 5) Interacting random systems; 6) Stochastic algorithms and nonparametric statistics; 7) Continuum mechanics.
