Hydrodynamic lubrication of rough surfaces. (English) Zbl 0535.76043
In lubrication theory, there are two types of surface roughness: 1) Reynolds, 2) Stokes roughness. Assuming the Reynolds roughness, the author has applied homogenization theory which is based on the ratio of the length scales and not based on the amplitude of the surface roughness. Thus the author has solved the squeeze film problem of lubrication and showed that for a transverse sinusoidal roughness, there is an increase in the load and for a parallel sinusoidal roughness, there is a decrease in the load. This is a good paper and will be found most useful for lubrication engineers.
