Indices d’association partielle entre variables ”qualitatives” ordinales. (English) Zbl 0544.62055

In a series of previous publications the author has built up a system of indexes of proximity, apt to measure association between two descriptive statistical variables. The present paper is based essentially on a voluminous (125 pages) research report by the author: CorrĂ©lation partielle dans le cas ”qualitatif”; Rapport IRISA n. 153, Rennes (1981), in which the concepts and general principles, underlying that system, were applied to the question of partial association and conditional independence between two variables with respect to another variable (of the same nature), whose influence is to be eliminated, and extends these ideas and proceeds from the case of descriptive attributes to that of ordinal variables.
The resulting system leads to some new indexes, but embraces, e.g., M. G. Kendall’s partial rank correlation, whose main property is found to be a special case of one of the numerous theorems derived in this paper.
