Equilibrium of structures which adhere to their support. (Équilibre de structures qui adhèrent à leur support.) (French) Zbl 0551.73096
In a preceding note, we have described the constitutive laws of the adhesion of two solids [see the summary above (Zbl 0551.73095)]. We give a variational formulation of the equilibrium of an elastic structure: it is a nonconvex minimization problem. We give also an existence theorem and an approximation adapted to numerical computations. Let us consider two solids which adhere on a conform surface (in their natural configuration the solids are in contact on a surface whose area is not zero); the intensity of the force which is necessary to start the separation of the two solids is proportional to the square root of the product of the Dupré energy of adhesion and of the elasticity modulus. The application of the theory to curvilinear media is considered.
