While there are many books that aim to give a comprehensive and yet general overview of data mining, this book focuses on mining scientific data, particularly images or mesh data. Scientific data are normally more complicated and often obtained from multiple sources. Hence, extensive discussion has been done on pre-processing of the raw data prior to the mining process, as well as post-processing, which analyzes and identifies useful patterns from the mining results. Besides, the author also listed some state-of-the-art techniques in mining scientific data, especially based on her experiences in mining data from several scientific disciplines.
In the last chapter, the author presents the roadmap to kick-start scientific data mining, the challenges as well as the opportunities, which would be informative to researchers who wish to pursue this field. Generally, this book serves as a comprehensive resource to those who are interested in scientific data mining, not only from its content, but also with respect to the references that are cited at the end of each chapter.
