The basic content of this lecture is a survey of results on the problem of describing automorphisms and homomorphisms of subgroups of algebraic groups. Special sections are devoted to the O’Meara method and the results of J. Tits on homomorphisms of Lie groups. The lecture contains a number of results of Voskresenskii, Margulis, Mostow, Platonov, Kneser, Kazhdan et al., which do not have a direct relationship with the main theme of the lecture.
