This is a survey of recent results on the order structure of the cofinal subsets of a directed partially ordered set. The starting point for many of these results is the following theorem of Pouzet: if the directed p.o. set P has no infinite antichain then every cofinal subset of P contains a cofinal subset which is the direct product of a finite number of chains.
