Liquid drops suspended by soap films. II: Simplified model. (English) Zbl 0573.76091

In this paper a simplified model of liquid drops suspended by soap films is given. The theory is based on variational methods, applying to drops suspended within non-circular frames. Conditions relating to the presence of a free boundary and to the uniqueness of solutions are discussed. The model provides reasonable approximations to the observed properties of suspended drops that are not too massive and are near their limit of stability. Finally some unresolved aspects of new topics are reviewed.
