Séminaire de Mathématiques Supérieures. Séminaire Scientifique OTAN (NATO Advanced Study Institute), 88. Département de Mathématiques et de Statistique, Université de Montréal. Montréal: Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal. 123 p. $ 17.00 (1984).
This monograph is based on a series of lectures given by the author at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Montréal during July - August 1982. It is divided into 8 small chapters, the first being an introductory one (14 pp.) explaining the concepts, definitions, sampling plans and the estimation problem.
The second chapter (11 pp.) introduces regression analysis in sample surveys and discusses the problems of comparison of two populations by a chi-squared test. Chapter 3 concerns itself (11 pp.) with the question of utilisation of auxiliary information in stratification and difference estimation.
Estimation of the population total and its generalizations by the method of multiple regression is explained in Chapter 4 (24 pp.), the lengthiest chapter of this monograph, and the choice of sampling plans is discussed in Chapter 5 (14 pp.).
Next in Chapter 6 (11 pp.) is considered the important problem of practical significance, namely, domain estimation and synthetic estimates. A brief account (10 pp.) of two stage sampling is presented in Chapter 7 and considerable space is devoted to the non-response problem in Chapter 8 (14 pp.).
At the end there are over 30 important references. The book is written in a clear and lucid style. We feel that it is not only useful to the participants of the NATO Advanced Study Institute but also to the majority of advanced students and researchers in survey sampling.
