Mathematics and its Applications. Statistics and Operational Research. Chichester: Ellis Horwood Limited; New York etc.: Halsted Press: a division of John Wiley&Sons. 448 p. £55.00 (1986).
This book is an undergraduate level textbook suitable for a course in decision theory or as background reading for many disciplines: mathematics, statistics, operational research, management science, economics, psychology and politics. The author also hopes to find readership outside academic circles, but some familiarity with basic mathematical concepts and notation is then required. The topics of the book are as follows: Decision problems, decision and strict uncertainty, preference orders and value functions, multi-attribute value theory, utility theory, objective and subjective probability, decision trees and multistage problems, group decisions and social choice, measurement, modelling and interpretation, and some non-Bayesian approaches. The book contains numerous problems and hints to their solution are given in the final chapter. The author also provides an extensive and useful list of references.
