Unitary representations of the Virasoro algebra. (English) Zbl 0593.17012

Recent work by P. Goddard, D. Olive and the author is described. The Virasoro algebra is a central extension of the algebra of vector fields on the circle. They showed that certain representations of the algebra, which are of physical interest, can be constructed explicitly, and they are unitary with respect to the inner product on a Fock space. The Fock space is that of the ”quark model”, the theory of a real fermion field defined on the circle.
