Savage, Stuart B. The mechanics of rapid granular flows. (English) Zbl 0598.76104 Adv. Appl. Mech. 24, 289-366 (1984). The review of some papers and experimental and theoretical discussion of the various modes and regimes of granular flow is presented. Some examples of ”bulk solids” or ”granular fluid” are mineral concentrate, coal, sand, granular snow, powder and so on. The flows in vertical channels and inclined chutes are reviewed with the help of experimental observation of stress, velocity and bulk density field. Laboratory devices and viscometric type experiments designed to the constitutive stress-strain-rate behavior are discussed. The author reviews theories for high-shear rate bulk solids. Macro-viscous, quasi- static, grain-inertia regimes are described. Continuum and microstructural theories are presented. Some problems in mechanics of ”granular fluid” are formulated at the end of the article.
