Evariste Galois et la planète Mars: Introduction à la théorie algébrique du codage. (French) Zbl 0603.94009
This article contains an introductory survey of algebraic coding theory. Many of the important notions and results of coding are introduced and discussed, largely by way of examples and without proof. Linear codes are introduced and aspects of them, such as optimization of code parameters, asymptotically good codes, MDS codes and the problem of decoding, are considered. Cyclic and self dual codes and important results on them are given. The role of permutation groups in coding theory is examined as well as combinatorial, finite geometric and agebraic geometric aspects of codes.
