[For the entire collection see Zbl 0591.00024.] We review the on-going research work at Swansea into the application of finite element based methods to the solution of problems involving compressible fluid flow. From the outset, our main area of activity has been the development of algorithms for modelling supersonic flows, with the ultimate aim of producing a computer code for predicting aerodynamic heating rates over bodies of complex geometrical shape at high Mach number.
