Solution of an inverse problem for fractals and other sets. (English) Zbl 0613.28008

Let \(w_ 1,...,w_ N\) be contractions of a compact metric space K into itself. J. E. Hutchinson [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 30, 713-747 (1981; Zbl 0598.28011)] showed that there exists a unique compact attractor \(A\subset K\) such that \(A=\cup^{N}_{i=1}w_ i(A).\) This paper deals with a construction of an approximate solution for the inverse problem: Given A, find \(w_ 1,...,w_ N.\)
