The author presents a combination of adaptive local mesh refinement and multigrid as used in his software package PLTMG. Adaptive mesh refinement is based on an a posteriori estimate using only local computations based on solving a Neumann problem in each element. Many details and proofs, which can be found elsewhere, are omitted, and emphasis is placed on the algorithmic aspects. Numerical illustrations are included.
