Basic results for the theory of boundary value problems of second order ordinary differential equations with singularities with respect to the independent, or one of the phase variables are discussed. In particular, tests for solvability and unique solvability of two-point boundary value problems and problems on bounded and monotone solutions are presented. Some concrete problems arising in applications (nuclear physics, field theory, boundary layer of a viscous incompressible fluid, etc.) are considered (103 references).
