This is an exposition (essentially without proofs) of a geometric character theory for reductive groups, following [Invent. Math. 75, 205- 272 (1984; Zbl 0547.20032) and Adv. Math. 56, 193-237 (1985; Zbl 0586.20018), 57, 226-265 (1985; Zbl 0586.20019), 57, 266-315 (1985; Zbl 0594.20031), 59, 1-63 (1986; Zbl 0602.20035) and 61, 103-155 (1986; Zbl 0602.20036)]. We have also included disconnected groups in the treatment.
