Performance measures independent of adjustment. An explanation and extension of Taguchi’s signal-to-noise ratios (with discussion). (English) Zbl 0664.62103
This is an important contribution to Taguchi methods in off-line quality control. The authors show that for certain underlying models for the product/process response, maximization of Taguchi’s signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio leads to minimization of average quadratic loss. It is proved that, in presence of ‘adjustment parameters’, the parameter design optimization procedure can be conveniently decomposed into two smaller optimization steps, the first being maximization of the S/N ratio. The paper also brings out the limitations of S/N ratios.
