A sketch of Donaldson’s magnificent work with 4-dimensional differentiable manifolds, especially emphasizing the use of methods adapted from physics (in particular, instantons and the Yang-Mills equations). For example, one such result is that there are “exotic” 4- spaces that contain compact sets that do not lie inside any differentiably imbedded 3-sphere.
