Bott, Raoul The topological constraints on analysis. (English) Zbl 0666.01012 A century of mathematics in America, Pt. II, Hist. Math. 2, 527-542 (1989). [For the entire collection see Zbl 0659.00007.] The author remembers his contacts with Serre, Thom, Hirzebruch and other twelve first-class topologists. Some remarkable topological results are examinated as generalisations of “The maximum principle” and “The Brouwer fixed point theorem”. Very interesting are opinions of the specialists during the launching and forming of the new theories.
