This paper presents the point of view on the modern theory of automorphic forms by a man who influenced to a great extent today’s character of this theory. The most part - and most interesting - is devoted to a discussion of Arthur’s general trace formula and the so-called “principle of functoriality” which implies the possibility of transporting automorphic representations from one group to another.
