This is the second edition (after Addison-Wesley, 1975) of the English translation of Chapters 1-3 of Nicolas Bourbaki’s ‘Lie Groups and Lie Algebras’, a book in the celebrated series ‘The Elements of Mathematics’ [for reviews of the French original (1971/72) see Zbl 0213.04103 and Zbl 0244.22007]. Its distinctive feature is the relative independence of Chapters 1 and 2 from the other parts of the ‘Universe’ which makes it quite readable even for the advanced beginner. A large number of research exercises and Historical Notes makes the book a great value for all working mathematicians, too.
