We formulate alternating-direction iterative methods of two types for treating the linear equations arising from mixed finite element methods for second order elliptic problems. Both types are related to iterative methods for arbitrary saddle point problems, though our discretization of the virtual time variable or variables is different. We recall some theoretical results from recent papers of the authors and then present the results of several numerical experiments.
