[For the entire collection see Zbl 0672.00015.] For a linear system with one input and one output one can choose between a time domain description based on the state space, i.e. a system of first order differential equations, or one based on a single higher order differential equation that directly relates input and output. There exists well developed procedures for passing from one description to the other. For nonlinear systems there has recently been a great interest in developing similar procedures. The aim of this paper is to discuss the use of differential algebraic procedures.
