Maximal tori without effect in semisimple algebraic groups. (English. Russian original) Zbl 0699.20037

Math. Notes 44, No. 3-4, 651-655 (1988); translation from Mat. Zametki 44, No. 3, 309-318 (1988).
A description of the structure of generic tori of connected semisimple algebraic groups is given. This is applied to investigate arithmetic and geometry of maximal tori in semisimple simply connected and adjoint groups defined over algebraic number fields. This approach is especially interesting for anisotropic semisimple groups.
