A history of the second fifty years, American Mathematical Society, 1939- 1988. (English) Zbl 0702.01017

American Mathematical Society Centennial Publications, 1. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS). viii, 346 p. $ 40.00 (1988).
This is a book of lists, lists of facts and names concerned with the American Mathematical Society. There are lists of meetings held, conferences and finances over the years. It provides a useful record of the activities from 1939 to 1988. The list of presidents includes a photograph and brief biographical details. I found this rather disappointing. I would have liked more information on nearly everyone listed in particular John von Neumann. The details of Julia Bowman mentioned that her major appointment was received belatedly because of nepotism. The details involved would have made this really interesting. I found two passages in the book fascinating. The first was the history of Mathematical Reviews and its relationship with Zentralblatt für Mathematik. The second was the application for membership from Nicolas Bourbaki.
