A dictionary of statistical terms. Prepared for the International Statistical Institute. 5th ed. (English) Zbl 0729.62001

Harlow: Longman Scientific & Technical; New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. viii, 223 p. £26.50 (1990).
The first author of the preceding editions, Professor M. G. Kendall, died in 1983, and the other, Dr. W. R. A. Buckland, has now retired. This dictionary has been in print for over 30 years, and is a tribute to the value of the original concept and to the energy and erudition of the authors. The International Statistical Institute, which initiated the first edition of 1957, in 1987 invited the present author to revise it for the fifth edition.
The form of the dictionary remains unaltered, and most of the entries are unchanged apart from minor typographical corrections. There are about 400 new entries, based on a study of the literature over the past ten years. The previous editions included a number of Italian terms, these are omitted in the new edition. Apart from these, only a very few terms that seemed both ephemeral and obsolete have been omitted. References in the text indicate, in most cases, the author and date of the publication in which the term was first used. This follows the practice of the fourth edition.
In conclusion, this revision is an attempt to maintain the standards set by the original authors.
