A necessary condition for embeddability of a compact CR manifold \(M\) is stated. This reads as infinite dimension for the (nontrivial) cohomology groups of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex at the points of \(M\) where the Levi form has maximal rank. This is related to a result by M. Sato, M. Koshimoto and T. Kawai [Lect. Notes Math. 287, 263-529 (1973; Zbl 0277.46039)] on infinite dimension of solutions of systems with constant rank and simple characteristics.
