Summary: Standard orthonormal bases of wavelets with dilation factor 2 use wavelets with one octave bandwidth. Orthonormal bases with \({1\over 2}\) octave or even smaller bandwidth wavelets are constructed. These wavelets are special cases of the “wavelet packet” construction by R. Coifman and Y.
