The book introduces us to the reading of Newton’s Principia. Close reading of texts is combined with historically informed commentary. Until 1679 Newton’s thought about orbital motion was framed in terms of Cartesian vortices. It was Robert Hooke, who first confronted him with the idea of constructing orbits out of inertial motion along the tangent and an attraction to the center.
