Summary: A coupled bending and stretching model for slender shallow arches (planar or not) is obtained from the three-dimensional linear elasticity model as the area of the cross-section tends to zero. We prove a convergence result justifying the method from a mathematical viewpoint, and we also give a precise definition of “shallow arch”.
