A hundred years of prime numbers.

*(English)*Zbl 0871.11005On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first proof(s) of the prime number theorem (by Jacques Hadamard and Charles-Jean de la Vallée-Poussin independently in 1896), the authors survey work on the distribution of primes. While they say “In this survey we had to treat fleetingly or omit entirely many interesting topics”, it is in fact surprising how much they have been able to mention and reference in a small compass. Because of this economy and the clarity of their writing as well as the nature of their references, the paper can be heartily recommended as an introduction to introductions to prime number theory.

In addition, it contains portraits of Chebyshev, Riemann, de la Vallée-Poussin, Hadamard, Landau, Littlewood, and Wiener.
