The first edition of this book was published in 1981. A full review of the second edition (1989) appeared in Zbl 0686.15001, and the third edition (1992) was reviewed in Zbl 0777.15001. In the fourth edition a number of sections have been streamlined, reorganized or rewritten, and at the end of each chapter a collection of MATLAB projects has been included. In order to facilitate the use of MATLAB, a brief appendix on its use in linear algebra has been added.
