A linear sampling method for the detection of leukemia using microwaves. (English) Zbl 0907.92014

The authors consider the possibility of using microwaves to detect leukemia, the method being based on the fact that the disease alters the refractive index of bone marrow. It is pointed out that, mathematically, an ill-posed problem arises, and a regularization process is suggested. The solution of the problem is based on the determination of the support of inhomogenities rather than values of the refractive index within them. Some numerical examples are given.
