Probability and Doob. (English) Zbl 0918.60007

The paper discusses a short history of the theory of probability, concentrating and pointing out the remarkable work of J. L. Doob within the field. From martingale theory to “Classical potential theory and its probabilistic counterpart” (1984; Zbl 0549.31001), and K. L. Chungs’s “Lectures from Markov processes to Brownian motion” (1982; Zbl 0503.60073), Doob’s activity placed him among the prominent American scientists in probability theory and mathematics in general.
