This volume is a biography of the Austrian physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968). The chapters are structured according to the main periods of the life of Lise Meitner, emphasizing on her formation, academic career and scientific achievements. There are also related various aspects on the social history of Austria and Germany during the first half of the XXth century. Special chapters are devoted to scientific life in Nazi Germany and World War II. There are included many stories on major discoveries in nuclear physics in the XXth century (for example that of nuclear fission), quotations from writings or records of scientists and other personalities with whom Lise Meitner had interacted and excerpts from official domuments. The book also contains quotations from Lise Meitner’s writings and correspondence, photos, notes, a chronology, a list of awards and honors, a list of her publications, a rich bibliography and an index.
