Summary: We give a formulation of the Stokes system in terms of velocity and vorticity, in a bounded three-dimensional domain, leading to the solution of symmetric problems only. This is basically achieved by the setting of a two-component vector boundary problem in order to determine the solenoidal harmonic component of the vorticity. The treatment of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by means of this approach is straightforward.
