Summary: The aim of this work is to give a short explanation of the laws of a simple mechanical impact system, to elucidate the transitions to chaotic motion and to illustrate the periodic and chaotic motions of more complicated systems. In view of the nature of this work and the broad scope of the problems involved, only the results of theoretic and analogue studies are presented here, with references given to more detailed analyses.
