The origins of mathematical abstraction. (English) Zbl 0934.18001

The author lists 37 books and papers (from Hilbert to Jacobson – not to forget Mac Lane) which were actually involved in the development of the axiomatic method up to 1945. In particular they were all known to Eilenberg and Mac Lane at the time of the discovery of category theory.
The striking influence of D. Hilbert is highlighted.
