Sergej Konstantinovich Godunov. (Russian) Zbl 0935.01013

Sergej Konstantinovich Godunov (born 1929) is world-wide known due to a method for calculating shock waves which is usually referred to as the Godunov method. He contributed to the theory of difference schemata and especially to the theory of difference methods for the numerical solution of problems in gas dynamics, to the problems of guaranteed accuracy in numerical linear algebra, to the theory of ordinary differential equations, and to many other fields of mathematics and mechanics. The article under review is an essay on scientific and pedagogical activities of S. K. Godunov and is published on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of his birth.
