The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrent’ev, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It contains an outline of his life and activities.
M. A. Lavrent’ev is known as the creator of the theory of quasiconformal mappings and the creator of Academy-town in Novosibirsk. He is also known due to his contributions to descriptive set theory, to the theory of extremal problems for conformal mappings, to the theory of approximation of a function of one complex variable, to the theory of boundary correspondence for conformal mappings, to partial differential equations, and to hydrodymanics.
