Chaotic behavior in the solar system (following J. Laskar). (English) Zbl 0976.70009

Séminaire Bourbaki. Volume 1998/99. Exposés 850-864. Paris: Société Mathématique de France, Astérisque. 266, 113-136, Exp. No. 854 (2000).
Numerically assisted analysis of the dynamics of the solar system, mainly due to J. Laskar, is presented in an informal way. Most results on the chaotic dynamics of inner planets lack a rigorous justification, and thus they could inspire mathematicians (a list of selected challenging problems is given at the end of the paper). Further, studies of large-scale chaos and the spacing of inner planets, if combined with suitable scenario for planetary accretion, form another computer-assisted branch of J. Laskar’s research. A recent paper on organization of generic planetary system [cf. J. Laskar, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 3240–3243 (2000)] is worthy of perusal.
