Bhatia, Rajendra (ed.), Analysis, geometry and probability. Essays in honour of K. R. Parthasarathy. With the assistance of Abhay G. Bhatt. Delhi: Hindustan Book Agency (ISBN 978-81-85931-12-8/hbk; 978-93-80250-87-8/ebook). Texts and Readings in Mathematics 10, 397-416 (1996).
This expository paper explains, by means of some well understood examples, the difference between gradient and nongradient systems in the context of diffusive hydrodynamic scaling limits. Especially, the ideas leading to the nonlinear diffusion equations are carefully examined.
