Coincidence theory: The minimizing problem. (English. Russian original) Zbl 0980.55001

Bukhshtaber, V. M. (ed.) et al., Solitons, geometry, and topology: on the crossroads. Collected papers dedicated to the 60th birthday of Academician Sergei Petrovich Novikov. Transl. from the Russian. Moscow: MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica, Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 225, 45-77 (1999); translation from Tr. Mat. Inst. Steklova 225, 52-86 (1999).
Summary: We provide a short history of the main contributions about the problem of computing the minimal coincidence number \(MC[f_1,f_2]\) where \((f_2,f_2)\) is a pair of maps between two topological spaces and where these maps can be homotopically deformed. The more recent contributions are treated in more detail, including some material not yet published.
