This is one of the true classics on equilibrium statistical mechanics, and, as the author states in his new preface, only a small fraction has been superceded. In addition to the extra references recommended here, I would like to mention the monograph by H.-O. Georgii [Gibbs measures and phase transitions, Berlin, de Gruyter (1988; Zbl 0657.60122)] and a recent introductory text by G. Keller [Equilibrium states in ergodic theory, Cambridge Univ. Press (1998; Zbl 0896.28006)].
It is good to see Ruelle’s book back in print and I am convinced it will continue to be one of the important and reliable sources in this field. I strongly recommend it to everybody who is interested in equilibrium statistical mechanics. It is actually hard to believe that this book was written more than 30 years ago!
