L. E. J. Brouwer and the foundations of mathematics. (L. E. J. Brouwer en de grondslagen van de wiskunde.) (Dutch) Zbl 1024.03003
Epsilon Uitgaven 51. Utrecht: Epsilon Uitgaven (ISBN 90-5041-061-8/pbk). iv, 209 p. (2001).
This is a reprint of the 1907 doctoral dissertation (in Dutch) of L. E. J. Brouwer, together with some other early texts by Brouwer. Dirk van Dalen edited the booklet with great care. Corrections and additions that Brouwer made when he considered publishing a second edition at the end of World War I, have been inserted. Van Dalen wrote an introduction, included important letters that Brouwer and his supervisor Korteweg exchanged. He added philosophical fragments that Korteweg refused to accept and texts that give us an idea of what was said when Brouwer defended the thesis. Mannoury’s critical reviews of the dissertation are included and Brouwer’s reaction to them as well.
