This welcome addition to the Wiley Classics Library provides an ideal introduction to the study and application of nonlinear optics, and it also serves to document the development of the subject up to 1984 when the book was first published. The book starts with a brief account of the historical development of the subject and then, through 28 chapters, proceeds to topics like the general description of wave propagation in nonlinear media, sum-frequency generation, parametric amplification and oscillation, and on to self-focusing and nonlinear optics in optical waveguides.
The book will also be useful for experimenters in nonlinear optics as it details many applications, all of which are supported by experimental work. This book can be recommended to anyone wishing to enter this interesting field, and also to experts who will find in it a wealth of useful reference material.
