From author’s summary: The author considers the self-similar problem of isentropic spherical or cylindrical piston-driven compression for an initially uniform and quiescent substance characterized by a realistic equation of state. The evolution of state variables and their time dependence at the piston are described. Asymptotic behavior is determined. The results obtained by solving the problem of compression in a capsule in the approximation of an incompressible medium are presented.
